Pirates, Pints & Party Time!

Where warriors battled and minstrels played, merriment knew no bounds. The Florida Renaissance Festival was a raucous and unforgettable escape into the past.

February 22nd, 2025

Hark! The Florida Renaissance Festival hath once again flung wide its gates, beckoning brave souls to a realm of revelry, ruckus, and rowdy good times! With the ol’ gang assembled, tankards raised, and bellies soon to be filled, we didst embark upon a most noble quest—one of mirth, merriment, and meaty indulgence!

Our revels commenced with a mighty “Huzzah!” as we pledged our fealty to our chosen knight, roaring our support through the clash of lances and the thunderous hooves of noble steeds. When steel met steel upon the battlefield, we cheered till our throats did protest! ‘Twas a test of valor and might, and lo, our knight did not disappoint. In the lulls between battles, we turned our eyes to the wandering jesters and daring acrobats, who twisted, tumbled, and torched the air with their antics.

Verily, history’s finest trades were on full display! We beheld blacksmiths hammering out weapons fit for a warrior, glassblowers conjuring art from molten fire, and the trebuchet launching its payload in a most satisfying display of destruction. A cannon roared, shaking the very earth, causing many a reveler to leap from their boots and spill their ale (a most tragic fate, indeed!).

And lo, the merchants did line the lanes, offering treasures aplenty! Trinkets of silver and gold, boots that would make even a rogue jealous, and armor fit for the fiercest of warriors (or perhaps just the most ambitious of costume partygoers). Pirates, nobles, and peasants alike found garb to suit their station, and shouldst thou feel the need to brandish a blade, fear not—swords of the finest craftsmanship were there for the taking (for a price, of course—no pillaging allowed!).

But what is a festival without feast and flagon? A sorry affair, indeed! Fear not, for the options were as plentiful as a king’s banquet. We didst partake of baked potatoes, gyros, bao buns, baguettes, and empanadas. And lo! The sacred turkey legs—verily, large enough to bludgeon a man—were consumed with great relish. Pickles of formidable size made their rounds, while nitrogen-smoking ice cream and cereal puffs didst bewilder and delight the senses.

Yet the crowning moment of our revelry? The warrior drummers of SAMKOMA! With drums that did shake the heavens and chanting that stirred the very soul, they transported us to lands of Norsemen and warriors of old. Theirs was not merely a performance—it was a summoning of spirits, a unifying of battle-born souls, and an absolute banger of a show! With influences from Taiko drums to Nordic sagas, SAMKOMA wove a mighty spell upon all who gathered, leaving us breathless and craving more.

This weekend’s pirate theme brought forth a most unruly and joyous horde, decked out in hats, eye patches, and enough swagger to make the seas jealous. With tankards clashing and shanties echoing through the air, ‘twas a gathering worthy of the rowdiest of sailors.

So raise a goblet, don thy finest tunic, and prepare for a day of adventure—nay, a day of legend! The Florida Renaissance Festival hath proven once more that it be the grandest of escapes, a realm where history and fantasy collide in a spectacular display of revelry. We shall return, forsooth, and until then—Huzzah!

Surfside’s Paddletopia 2026 Served Up Sunshine, Sweat, and Veggie-Packed Bites

Veggies Made Great helped fuel a family-friendly weekend of free workouts, paddleboarding, coffee, small bites, and feel-good fun at 96th Street Park.

May 18, 2026

Surfside brought the good vibes this weekend with Paddletopia 2026, a two-day wellness and outdoor lifestyle event that turned 96th Street Park into a sunny little hub for movement, community, and family-friendly fun.

Held on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event welcomed kids, adults, fitness lovers, coffee drinkers, paddleboarders, and anyone looking for a fresh-air weekend by the water. The best part? So many of the experiences were free, making it easy for families and locals to drop in, move around, and enjoy the day without overthinking it.

The workout classes were a highlight, bringing plenty of energy to the park with approachable, upbeat sessions that made wellness feel fun instead of intimidating. Between the fitness classes, paddleboarding, live music, wellness activations, and relaxed outdoor atmosphere, Paddletopia had that perfect South Florida mix of active and easygoing.

Of course, no great weekend event is complete without good bites. Veggies Made Great, an official event partner, kept guests fueled with complimentary samples of their veggie-packed favorites, including the Spinach Egg White Frittata and Lemon Blueberry Muffin. The samples were a smart fit for the day: light, wholesome, tasty, and easy to enjoy between activities. Paired with coffee and other small bites available throughout the event, it made for the kind of simple, satisfying spread that both kids and adults could get behind.

The event also had a thoughtful environmental angle through the “Paddle for Plastic” initiative with Plastic Fisherman, encouraging attendees to help clean Surfside canals in exchange for eco-friendly rewards. It added a meaningful layer to the weekend, blending wellness, community, and environmental care in a way that felt natural for a coastal town like Surfside.

Overall, Paddletopia 2026 felt like exactly what a South Florida weekend should be: outdoorsy, welcoming, active, delicious, and just a little bit sun-kissed. From free fitness classes to better-for-you snacks and community-focused fun, Surfside gave families a reason to get outside and enjoy the best of wellness by the water.
