Pretty Woman The Musical Reimagined in Miami

Romance, Laughter, and Iconic Thigh-High Boots: Pretty Woman Takes Center Stage in Miami.

December 5th, 2023

Broadway in Miami is bringing the quintessential romantic comedy, Pretty Woman, its first show of the 2023-2024 season, to the stage at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts from December 5th to December 10th. Pretty Woman: The Musical, based on the 1990 film starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, kicked off with a spectacular musical number, Welcome to Hollywood, introducing the colorful company. This dazzling performance truly captured the essence of the 1980s down to the art deco palm tree set pieces and true-to-the-era attire.

Ellie Baker, also known for her prior roles in Les Misérables and Bring It On, transformed into beloved sex worker Vivian Braun down to her iconic thigh-high boots, fiery curls, and infectious snorts. She added her own flare to the role, however, making the audience roar in laughter as she clumsily yet gracefully navigated the high-class world of Los Angeles and Rodeo Drive. Baker’s enchanting voice brought Vivian’s emotions alive in song, exploring the inner dimensions of the character previously unexplored in the film.

Director and Choreographer, Jerry Mitchell, embodied that similar flare with countless dance numbers that were not only expertly executed, but also conveyed the wit and humor of the characters. In teaching Vivian how to blend into sophisticated society, the hotel manager, Mr. Thompson, played by Adam Du Plessis, had the audience guffawing when he took the hand of the bellhop instead, gliding across the stage in a flawless tango backed by a soulful Spanish guitar. With each change in mood, the stage transformed in both color and substance, with scenery moving mid-song making it a dynamic and captivating performance.

The sexual chemistry between Vivian and the rugged Edward Lewis, played by Chase Wolfe, was palpable. When Edward tears off his shirt before a scantily clad Vivian atop the grand piano, it felt like watching a private moment between lovers. As the sheer curtain descended, their bodies intertwined while the piano was rolled offstage in a risqué yet playful change of scene. Wolfe also has a resonating voice that portrays a more emotional side to the character. Audiences for the first time are able to hear Edward’s blossoming love as he watches Vivan enjoy her first opera. This absolute must-see was not only a faithful homage to the film but offers a unique perspective never seen before.
