Kravis Center Lights Up West Palm Beach with Sass and Sarcasm in Mean Girls Musical.

December 5th, 2023

Mean Girls, the hilarious hit musical from an award-winning creative team that includes book writer Tina Fey, composer Jeff Richmond, lyricist Nell Benjamin, and original director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw, is currently on stage at Kravis on Broadway.

The musical, based on the Paramount Pictures film, brings the famous characters and creative humor to life on stage, resulting in a night of pure enjoyment. From the moment the curtain rose, the audience was transported to the chaotic world of high school drama, cliques, and a search for popularity. This version of Mean Girls brings you an updated musical with newer technology, smartphones, and a more colorful language. Despite having the crowd in stitches, several people departed in the midst of Act I due to the high schoolers on stage’s vulgarity.

Natalie Shaw, playing the role of Cady Heron, skillfully navigated the character’s journey from outsider to queen bee with both humor and heart. Ethan Jih-Cook as Damian and Alexys Morera as Janis, do a great job showing Cady around and introducing her to the school cliques and all the drama. The Plastics, Maya Petropoulos as Regina George, Kristen Amanda Smith as Gretchen Wieners, and MaryRose Brendel as Karen Smith, brought the right mix of sass, vulnerability, and comedic timing that made their characters unforgettable.

The set design was vivid and dynamic, reflecting the feel of a modern high school with creative transitions that kept the play moving at a quick pace. The colorful antics of the Plastics and the rest of North Shore High School were perfectly complemented by the Kravis Center’s stage.

Mean Girls cleverly addressed issues of identity, self-esteem, and the perils of conformity in a way that felt relevant and resonates with teenagers. The humor was sharp and self-aware, poking fun at the absurdities of high school life while also delivering poignant messages about the importance of self-acceptance.

The choreography was lively and fit the upbeat and contemporary score nicely. The ensemble cast showcased their dancing skills, adding an extra layer of excitement to the production.

Overall, Mean Girls at the Kravis Center was a smashing success. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the movie or a newcomer to the Plastics’ world, this musical delivers a hilarious and heartwarming experience that is sure to leave you laughing long after the curtains close. It’s a must-see for anyone looking to relive the hilarity of high school or simply enjoy a night of entertainment.
