Taylor Fritz wins again at Delray Beach Open
Taylor Fritz becomes back-to-back Delray Beach Open singles champion with exciting match vs fellow top-ranked American Tommy Paul.
February 19th, 2024
In a thrilling conclusion to the Delray Beach Open, the finals were rescheduled to Monday due to rain, but Florida’s relentless sun and heat added intensity to the showdown. The all-American final featured defending champion Taylor Fritz facing off against Tommy Paul.
The first set saw Fritz taking a quick lead with a powerful serve and a 1-2 combination, winning the first game. Despite a hard-fought effort from Tommy, he leveled the score at 1-all. Fritz continued to dominate with his serve, securing a 2-1 lead. The match showcased a brilliant rally with both players displaying exceptional shots, ultimately finishing at the net by Fritz.
Tommy struggled with his serve, committing a second double fault, allowing Fritz to capitalize and take the lead. Fritz maintained his momentum, serving powerfully for a 4-1 advantage. Tommy managed to secure a good game on his serve, keeping hope alive at 2-4. However, Fritz’s return power mode kicked in, leading him to a 5-2 lead. Tommy faced challenges, making double faults, and eventually losing the set.
In the second set, Taylor started with a double fault but managed to overcome resistance from Tommy, taking a 1-0 lead. Tommy fought back with strong serves, leveling the set at 1-1. Taylor continued to showcase his dominance, winning a game after the longest rally of the match for a 2-1 lead.
Tommy had opportunities to break, but Taylor’s powerful serves and strategic shots denied him. After several deuces, Taylor secured a 3-2 lead. Tommy persevered, leveling the set at 3-3. A great combination of shots from Tommy gave him a chance at 0-30, but Taylor responded with aces and strategic plays, eventually taking the game for a 4-3 lead.
Facing two break points at 3-4, Tommy lost the game, allowing Taylor to serve for the championship. With his trademark strategy of big rocket serves and forehand finishes, Taylor secured a back-to-back Delray Championship, becoming only the second player in the tournament’s 32-year history to achieve this feat.
This historic final marked the fourth time in the tournament’s history that both singles finalists were American. Additionally, it was the highest-ranked final in tournament history, with Taylor Fritz ranked No. 9 and Tommy Paul at No. 14. This achievement surpassed the previous record set in 2017. Taylor Fritz joined an elite club, becoming only the second player to win consecutive championships in the 32-year history of the Delray Beach Open, following Jason Stoltenberg’s feat in 1996-97.
