Catch Me If You Can The Musical Makes Crime Look Almost Too Fun

From High-Flying Cons to Heartfelt Duets: How ‘Catch Me If You Can’ Steals the Spotlight and Your Heart in Equal Measure.

October 11th, 2025

Catch Me If You Can: The Musical opening the MD Now® Urgent Care Slow Burn Theatre Company 2025/2026 season at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, is a dazzling, jazz-infused spectacle that blends heart, humor, and high-stakes adventure. Based on the hit DreamWorks film and the unbelievable true story of teenage con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., this production soars both literally and emotionally, with a style that feels like Ocean’s Eleven meets Chicago.

The show cleverly begins near the end of Frank’s story, immediately drawing the audience in, before peeling back the layers through a vibrant flashback. The lighting design by Eric Norbury plays a pivotal role in this journey, with neon accents bringing high-energy sequences to life, and dimmer, mood-driven moments that heighten the emotional depth of the narrative.

Jarod Bakum, reprising his Broadway chops from Anastasia!, embodies Frank Abagnale Jr. with charisma and wit. Yet it is Ben Sandomir as Agent Carl Hanratty who consistently steals the spotlight. Known for roles in Sweeney Todd, 9 to 5, and Honeymoon in Vegas, Sandomir captures the essence of an unwavering, father-figure-like presence, pairing solemn gravitas with strong vocals and endearing determination. His performance leaves the audience rooting for him as much as they marvel at Frank’s audacious escapades.

Samy Berman as Brenda Strong shines alongside Bakum during the heartfelt duet “Seven Wonders,” their chemistry and vocals creating a moment that makes you want to lean into your loved ones. Jeanine Levy’s Paula Abagnale is equally memorable, infusing her role with sassiness and vibrant energy that adds levity amidst Frank’s whirlwind adventures. Matthew Korinko, Michael Cartwright, and the ensemble provide additional layers of humor and excitement, creating a fully realized world of cons, charm, and chase.

Frank’s journey is as unbelievable as it is captivating. From posing as a substitute teacher, airline pilot, lawyer, and even a doctor, he navigates life’s challenges while avoiding capture. Yet beneath the thrill and laughter, the musical explores deeper themes—Frank’s admiration for his father and the shattering of his childhood ideals shape his relentless pursuit of success, leaving audiences to ponder the age-old question: does crime really pay?

The production is visually and technically spectacular. Cat Pagano’s choreography brings playful energy to every scene, while Rick Peña’s costumes add humor, style and vibrancy. Delightful effects, including falling snow, punctuate key moments, enhancing the sense of theatrical magic.

With a book by Terrence McNally and a swinging score by Hairspray’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, this Tony-nominated musical is a whirlwind of clever storytelling, unforgettable performances, and Broadway flair. Catch Me If You Can will leave you thinking, laughing and marveling at the audacity of youth, the complexity of family and the charm of a life lived on the edge.

The show continues its run through October 26th at the Amaturo Theater, Broward Center for the Performing Arts. An open-captioned performance is available on October 19th at 2 p.m.
